JERUSALEM-ON-THE-LINE March 24, 2011

“O righteous God who searches minds and hearts, bring to an end the violence of the wicked and make the righteous secure.” Ps 7:9

JERUSALEM BOMBING: : Large-scale terrorism returned to the streets of Jerusalem Wednesday afternoon when a powerful bomb was set off at a crowded bus stop near the downtown Central Bus Station. One person was killed and as many as 50 people were reportedly wounded in the explosion, which destroyed the bus stop and seriously damaged two buses that were stopped nearby at the time. The British Foreign Office confirmed Thursday that a UK national died in Wednesday's terrorist attack. The 60-year-old woman was critically wounded in the blast and succumbed to her wounds the same day at Haddasah-Ein Kerem Medical Center. At least four people were listed in serious condition, and were rushed to Jerusalem’s Hadassah-Ein Kerem Hospital for emergency treatment. Security officials said the bomb had been planted inside a paper bag at the base of a telephone booth next to the bus stop. They are still unsure how the bomb was set off - whether it was on a timer or was detonated by remote control. The terrorist managed to escape the scene. Roadblocks were immediately set up around Jerusalem in an effort to capture the terrorist and any accomplices. Israeli security forces reported Thursday it may be closing in on the terrorists responsible for the bombing. Sources in the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization claimed that two of its members were arrested Wednesday night in connection with the blast. ISRAEL POLICE ON HIGH ALERT IN WAKE OF DEADLY JERUSALEM BOMBING:  Israel Police went on high alert across the country Wednesday, following a terror attack in central Jerusalem earlier in the day in which one woman was killed and 50 people were wounded. Police throughout Israel were moved to level three operational activity, the highest level of alert, after a bomb exploded in front of the International Convention Center, in the first terror attack in the capital after a lull of almost three years. They also decided to bolster the number of officers in the Jerusalem and southern districts, and the police will be out in full force in the coming days throughout Israel. (Ha’aretz) Pray for the perpetrators of this attack to be found and brought to justice, also for the safety of all Israeli communities at this time.

12 VICTIMS OF TERROR ATTACK STILL HOSPITALIZED: Hospitals in Jerusalem are still treating 12 victims of Wednesday's terror attack in the city. Two of them are in serious condition. Five of the remaining victims are suffering from moderate wounds, and the other five are lightly wounded. A number of people who suffered shock are also being treated. (Ynet) Pray for the full recovery and G-d’s comfort to given to all who were victims of Wednesday’s attack.

WHO CAN I TRUST WITH MY DONATIONS?  Many people ask, "Where can I send my financial contributions and be sure they reach the people who need them most?"  As an employee of Vision for Israel & The Joseph Storehouse, I have witnessed since 2006, food, clothing and household goods go out to the poor, often twice a week. Thousands of dollars of hospital equipment have been freely given to old age and care institutions that simply can't afford new beds or other medical necessities. School packs have been prepared annually for thousands of needy children. Additionally, when there have been catastrophes abroad, Vision for Israel & The Joseph Storehouse are among the first to send necessary supplies to alleviate the distress. Your donations are needed and welcomed at www.visionforisrael.com  Make your online donations today. ISLAMIC JIHAD, HIZBULLAH PRAISE ATTACK IN JERUSALEM: The Hizbullah and Islamic Jihad terrorist groups praised Wednesday’s deadly terror bomb attack in Jerusalem. No terrorist group has taken responsibility for the bomb blast, but the Islamic Jihad, which denied it was involved despite having threatened to attack everywhere in Israel, said the terrorist organization “applauds all efforts to respond to the crimes committed daily against our people.” Hizbullah also lauded the attack, which killed one woman in her 60s and wounded dozens more. US Defense Secretary Robert Gates called it a “horrific terrorist attack, but I don't think I would characterize the situation there as deteriorating.” (INN)

US INTELLIGENCE REPORT: HIZBULLAH A SOCIO-POLITICAL MOVEMENT:  A US intelligence report has characterized Hizbullah as a political entity with terrorist capabilities. The distinction, which will appear in this year's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), removes the focus from Hizbullah's long pedigree as a terrorist organization and Iranian proxy in favor of viewing it as a social and political movement despite its ongoing involvement in terror. Officials who have read draft versions of the estimate say it assesses Hizbullah in a broad context, as a political and social force in Lebanon in addition to the militia officially designated by the United States as a “foreign terrorist organization.” Reports of the National Intelligence Estimate are intended to reflect the cumulative knowledge of US intelligence agencies and do not always form policy. Nonetheless, such an assessment is likely to raise the ire of many in Washington. Previous intelligence assessments characterizing Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood as a "largely secular political organization" came under fire as Egypt's popular revolution took hold earlier this year. Members of that organization - the spiritual brothers of Hamas - have long pushed an Islamic agenda and have been unabashedly involved in religiously motivated violence against Egypt's Christian community during the past year. IAF STRIKES GAZA AS ROCKET AND MORTAR FIRE AGAINST ISRAEL PERSISTS:  The Israel Air Force struck targets in the Gaza Strip before dawn on Thursday, as Palestinian terrorists persisted in volleying rockets and mortar shells across the border into southern Israel. Approximately five mortar shells and two Qassam rockets struck Israeli territory overnight, and another rocket was fired at the Ashkelon coast on Thursday morning. The barrage came after terrorists fired about a dozen rockets and mortars into the western Negev on Wednesday, and dozens more in the days prior. (Ha’aretz) “Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, your enemies will fall by the sword before you.” Lev 26:8

HAMAS UNHAPPY WITH BRITISH, GERMAN POSITIONS ON FLAREUP:  Hamas propaganda blamed Israel for causing civilian casualties in Gaza in IAF strikes that were carried out after Hamas escalated its illegal terrorist attacks on civilian population centers. Hamas denounced Germany and Britain for their statements affirming Israel's right to defend itself. "We condemn the massive missile bombardment of Israel from the Gaza Strip in the strongest terms. We demand that Hamas cease such acts of violence immediately," said Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle at a Berlin news conference. “Israel has the right to protect its citizens against terrorist activities like this. A new spiral of violence must be prevented at all costs.” Britain's Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt said: “I condemn the barrage of mortars on southern Israel from Gaza in recent days. The indiscriminate targeting of Israeli citizens, as they celebrated the Jewish festival of Purim, is unacceptable. The firing of over 50 mortars in the space of a few hours, as well as a Grad rocket on Ashkelon that caused injury and damage, signals a further, worrying escalation in the situation at a time when international efforts are focused on getting Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table,” he said. “Hamas must halt these strikes immediately, and rein in other militant factions in Gaza.” Hamas is a terrorist group that openly calls for Israel's annihilation. It has carried out countless deliberate massacres of civilians and taken pride in such barbaric attacks. It holds an IDF soldier, GIlad Shalit, in captivity, and does not let the Red Cross visit him. When attacked by Israel it uses its own civilians as human shields. (Arutz-7)

FORMER PRESIDENT MOSHE KATSAV SENTENCED TO 7 YEARS IN JAIL FOR RAPE:  Former President of the State of Israel Moshe Katsav was sentenced to seven years in jail Tuesday, after he had previously been found guilty of rape and other sexual offenses. The court also ruled Katsav must serve two years of probation and pay NIS 100,000 to his rape victim, a former employee of the Tourism Ministry known as A., and to pay NIS 25,000 to L., a former employee of the President's Residence, whom he had sexually harassed. Katsav will begin serving his sentence on May 8, 2011. (Ha’aretz)

ASSAD BLOCKADES DISAFFECTED SYRIAN AREAS - OVER A HUNDRED KILLED:  In an effort to contain spreading popular disorders against his regime, Syrian President Bashar Assad this week sent the 4th Armored Division to suppress the on-going uprising in Darra. The troops have also severed the South from Damascus and Jabal ad-Duruz where a demonstration is planned for March 26. More than 100 of demonstrators had been killed as of Thursday and hundreds more injured, by tear gas and live ammunition fire. (DEBKA)
