“The Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail.” Jer 20:11

EGYPTIAN MUSLIMS ATTACK CHRISTIANS OVER ROMANCE RUMORS: Muslim-Christian tensions broke out on Monday in Egypt, where a Muslim mob stormed a Christian neighborhood in the mixed city of Abu Tesht and set fire to several homes. The arson attack followed rumors that a Christian man was romantically involved with a young Muslim woman. None of the town's Christian residents were hurt in the mob attack. The Christian man and Muslim woman who became the subject of rumors after being seen walking together have been arrested. Last year a Christian man was accused of raping a Muslim girl. The alleged assault led to Muslim demonstrations and ultimately to violence, when six Christians and one Muslim guard were murdered at a church. Egyptian human rights groups have warned that violence against the country's Christian minority is on the rise. (INN) Pray for the safety of Christians in Egypt and for the release of the couple arrested on the basis of rumor and gossip.

POPE URGES FREEDOM FOR PAKISTANI CHRISTIAN: Pope Benedict XVI has urged the release of a Christian woman in Pakistan facing the death sentence on a charge of blasphemy. Benedict said on Wednesday that Christians in Pakistan "are often victims of violence and discrimination." He called for the release of Asia Bibi, who was recently sentenced to death accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad. (AP) Pray according to Scripture for Asia Bibi: “From the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.” Ps 68:20

HATRED TOWARD ISRAEL AND THE US EXPRESSED AT MUSLIM HAJJ PILGRIMAGE: Tens of thousands of Muslims chanted “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” at the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which the Ayatollah of Iran called “a symbol of spirituality.” The pilgrims repeated anti-US and anti-Zionist slogans during the ceremony, also attended by the Supreme Leader's representative for Hajj affairs, Hojatoleslam Ali Qazi-Asgar. Qazi-Asgar read a message from the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, who told Muslims to engage in "struggle and resistance against the aggressions of the United States and the Zionist regime." More than two million Muslims have amassed in the Desert of Arafat near Mecca at the annual Hajj gathering. (Arutz-7) “May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame.” Ps 129:5

PM FACES PARTY REVOLT OVER SETTLEMENT DEAL WITH US: The new building freeze plan ironed out by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week is beginning to melt. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday faced the prospect of open revolt from within his own party as top Likud MKs came out against his plan to freeze settlement building in return for American fighter planes. Several Likud leaders signed a letter urging Netanyahu to reject an offer of 20 F-35 stealth fighters in exchange for a 90-day freeze. As more details of the proposal become known, there are increasing calls for the Obama administration to put its verbal promises in writing. Deputy PM Dan Meridor, who is the most dovish Likud minister, said Tuesday that Netanyahu is waiting on Obama for written confirmation of the promises, including an American gift "reward" of 10 advanced stealth fighters in addition to those Israel already has agreed to buy. The US has verbally promised the proposed freeze will last for only 90 days and will be non-renewable. However, the Obama administration may not fulfill its promise unless Israel and the Palestinian Authority conclude an agreement on final borders for a PA state within a year. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and the Arab League are also sour on the Clinton freeze plan because it does not include areas of Jerusalem it wants as part of a state. Abbas has said that his demands are non-negotiable, mainly forcing Israel to give up land which was restored to the Jewish state in the Six-Day War in 1967. (Ha’aretz/INN)

PALIN: JERUSALEM IS ISRAEL’S CAPITAL – NOT A SETTLEMENT: Sarah Palin told 85 GOP freshmen Congressmen in an open letter, “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, not a settlement.” The 2008 vice presidential candidate for the Republican Party advised the new legislators, “You can stand with allies like Israel, not criticize them. You can let the President know what you believe and stick to the principles that propelled your campaigns.” (INN)

UK OPPOSES UNILATERAL PA STATE: British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Tuesday that his country wished to see an immediate resumption of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority – and that Britain opposes the PA's presenting a request for recognition of a PA state to the UN. Hague was speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, which was attended by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as well. PA officials are to meet with Russian representatives and others on the Security Council in an effort to garner support for recognition of a PA state. (INN)

ISRAEL MISSILE DEFENSE TO BE COMPLETED BY 2015: Israel's multi-layered air defense network will be fully deployed by 2015, combining short-range rocket interceptors with kamikaze satellites that blow up ballistic missiles in space. Unveiled at a government-sponsored aerospace conference in Jerusalem, the production schedule corresponds to Israel's assessment of when Iran might develop nuclear weaponry. Should the Islamic republic get the bomb, it could embolden allies Syria and Lebanese and Palestinian terrorists in their own fights against the Jewish state. (Ha’aretz)

ISRAEL INTELLIGENCE OFFICIAL: HAMAS ROCKETS CAN REACH TEL AVIV: A senior Israeli intelligence official warned Sunday that Hamas terrorist rulers in the Gaza Strip have rockets that can travel 80 kilometers (50 miles), which would put the coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv within range of its launchers. The official blamed Egypt, saying it was not doing enough to stem smuggling through a network of tunnels along the relatively short border between its Sinai desert and the Palestinian territory. (Ha’aretz)

RUSSIA’S PRESIDENT PLANNING FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT TO ISRAEL: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will come to Israel on an official visit January 17, in what will be his first trip to the country since becoming president. Medvedev's visit is expected to include discussions on the nuclearization of Iran, Russia's supply of advanced weapons to Syria and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Other, less sensitive topics will also be on the agenda, including the increase in the number of Russian tourists to Israel. (Ha’aretz)
