Israel Update

“Pray continually.” 1Thess 5: 17

ISRAEL PRIME MINISTER WANTS REGULAR MEETINGS WITH PALESTINIANS: Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu wants to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas every two weeks once direct peace talks resume this week. Netanyahu will propose the biweekly meetings with the Palestinian leader when the US-brokered negotiations formally resume on Thursday in Washington after a nearly two-year break. The last round of Mideast peace talks broke down in late 2008 after Israel launched a three-week military offensive against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip to stop near-daily rocket attacks against Israel’s southern communities. (AP) Pray for PM Netanyahu who will once again come under tremendous US pressure to bend to outrageous Palestinian demands to concede territory in the Jewish state for a false peace.

HAMAS WARNS PA BEFORE PEACE TALKS: Hamas the terrorist group in control of the Gaza Strip, warned the Palestinian Authority ahead of scheduled peace talks with Israel that "the Izz-a-Din al-Qassam Brigades will step on the heads of those who dare cede the right of return, or Jerusalem." Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya called for an uprising against the negotiations, scheduled to begin in Washington September 3, and against the delegation to attend them from Ramallah. (Ynet) When Israel was created in 1948, Arab states and Arab Palestinians attacked the Jewish community in Palestine and the Jewish state, vowing to "drive the Jews into the sea." They lost the war however, and some 725,000 Arab Palestinians at the behest of Arab leaders voluntarily fled from the area that became Israel. Palestinian Arabs claim any peace agreement with Israel must allow the descendants and families of these refugees, now numbering over 4 million, to return to Israel. If Israel were to agree to this Jews would become a minority in their own state. Return of the refugees would put an end to the Jewish homeland. This is only one of the impossible conditions Palestinians are placing on Israel in return for what can only be ongoing treachery and violence by Islamists who hate the Jewish state.

ISRAEL, US SEEK TO BLOCK FRENCH ANTI-MISSILE SALE TO LEBANON: Israel and the US are attempting to prevent a French-Lebanese arms deal. French Defense Minister Herve Moran offered to sell Lebanon 100 HOT anti-tank missiles for the Gazelle helicopters already in use by the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). Washington has grown increasingly skittish over arming the Lebanese military amid concerns the LAF may become engaged in a fight with Israel, an American ally, or be co-opted by the terrorist group Hizbullah. (J.Post)

ISRAEL READY TO DESTROY LAF IN 4 HOURS: The US warned Lebanon that if it did not prevent any recurrence of the border-fire incident that occurred earlier this month, the IDF would destroy the Lebanese Armed Forces within four hours. Frederick Hoff, assistant to US Middle East Peace Envoy George Mitchell, told Lebanese Army chief of staff Jean Kahwaji that Israel was ready to implement a plan to destroy within four hours all Lebanese military infrastructures, including army bases and offices, should a similar confrontation occur in the future. IDF Lt.-Col. Dov Harari, 45, was killed and Capt. Ezra Lakia was seriously wounded when both sides exchanged fire after IDF soldiers attempted to cut down a tree on the Israeli side of the border. The IDF had informed the UNIFIL peacekeeping force along the border ahead of time of the intended tree-clearing operation. (J.Post) “Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies.” Ps 68:34

ISRAEL WORKING TO THWART RUSSIAN ARMS DEAL WITH SYRIA: Israel is trying to prevent an arms deal between Russia and Syria, and PM Benjamin Netanyahu has asked his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to stop the arms sale involving advanced anti-shipping missiles. The deal entails the sale of advanced P-800 Yakhont supersonic cruise missiles to the Syrian military. Israel considers this weaponry capable of posing significant danger to its navy vessels in the Mediterranean Sea. (Ha’aretz)

IRAN UNDER PRESSURE: ‘NO FINAL DECISION’ ON DEATH BY STONING: Iran is reeling under an international uproar over the sentencing of a woman to death by stoning for adultery, and now says no final decision has been made in the case, which is "under review." Human rights groups have called on the EU to slap new sanctions against the Islamic Republic if it carries out the sentence. The case concerns Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, 43, who was convicted four years ago of adultery. EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton said, "The moment has come for the European Union to collectively express its rejection of practices of another age." (INN)  The punishment of stoning is designed to cause the victim grievous pain before leading to death. Such methods of execution specifically designed to increase the suffering of victims are of particular concern to Amnesty International, as the most extreme and cruel form of torture.

ISRAELI AGENT FIGHTS THE NERVE GAS THREAT: Israel's Protalix is racing the clock to develop PRX-105, a drug which promises protection against both nerve agents and organic phosphorous compounds used in the pest control industry. Killing within minutes of exposure, nerve gas is considered one of the most toxic chemical agents known to man. Now, a safeguard may be at hand with PRX-105, a novel compound being developed in Israel that offers protection against nerve agents. (21C)

ISRAELI TOMATO THAT DOESN’T NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED: An Israeli company that breeds and markets hybrid plant varieties has announced a new innovation: A tomato that doesn't need to be refrigerated. The tomato does not begin to spoil even after a week at room temperature. The tomato is the most popular vegetable in Israel.  (Ha’aretz)
