Israel Update

December 3, 2012

"FOR BEHOLD, in those days and at that time when I shall reverse the captivity and restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all nations and will bring them down into the Valley of Jehoshaphat, and there will I deal with and execute judgment upon them for their treatment of My people and of My heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations and because they have divided My land." Joel 3:1-2

EUROPE THREATENS TO WITHDRAW SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL OVER SETTLEMENT BUILDING PLANS: German, Dutch, British, and French envoys have communicated their protest over Israel's plan to construct 3,000 housing units in East Jerusalem, as well as other West Bank settlement blocs, announced after the UN vote on Palestine. Europe has been putting heavy diplomatic pressure on Israel to reverse its decision to proceed with development plans for a new neighborhood in the area between Ma’aleh Adumim and Jerusalem. Since Friday, five senior European ambassadors have communicated strong words of protest to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, all bearing the same main message: the European Union’s demand that Israel reverse its decision. BAN KI-MOON SLAMS NEW HOUSING IN JUDEA AND SAMARIA: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the UN warned Sunday, that Israeli plans for new construction in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria would deal an "almost fatal blow" to any prospects for peace with the Palestinian Authority. Referring to the E-1 area between Jerusalem and Maaleh Adumim, to the east of the capital Ban's office said in a statement, "Settlements are illegal under international law and, should the E-1 settlement be constructed, it would represent an almost fatal blow to remaining chances of securing a two-state solution." (Arutz-7) How is it that prior to last week’s UN vote recognizing Palestinian statehood there was no reminder to any nation by Ban regarding the illegality of circumventing the mandate for final status negotiations with Israel as required by the internationally-recognized Oslo Accords - signed by the PA and Israel in the 1990s? Was there any mention made by him as to what a death blow to the peace process this would be in terms of Israel’s participation?

NO MORE TAX FUNDS FROM ISRAEL TO PA: Israel has decided to withhold taxes collected for the Palestinian Authority that were to be transferred later in the month. Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz made the announcement Sunday at the weekly government Cabinet meeting. Steinitz said he would be withholding more than $100 million in tax revenues collected by Israel on behalf of the PA in response to the UN vote. He noted the PA owes Israel an even larger amount in unpaid electrical bills, so he will put the money toward covering that debt. The move is being made in response to the UN vote to approve a new status for the PA as a nonmember observer state - in effect, recognizing the Palestinian Authority as a de facto sovereign state. "This was a Palestinian provocation and an attempt to advance their state without recognizing Israel," Steinitz said. It also circumvented the mandate for final status negotiations with Israel as required by the internationally-recognized Oslo Accords signed by the PA and Israel in the 1990s. By abrogating that agreement, there now exists a legal question as to whether or not the entire document is null and void – including the section delineating economic agreements between Israel and the PA. In response, the day after the UN vote the Israeli government authorized construction of 3,000 housing units in "E1" - an area between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim - as well as in other areas of Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. "It is high time that Jerusalem is connected to Maale Adumim," continued Steinitz in his remarks on Sunday. "We told the US that if the Palestinians would go to the UN there would be repercussions." Netanyahu and other Israeli officials have warned that last week's Palestinian stunt at the UN would severely complicate the ability to ever reach such final status peace deal, and would therefore indefinitely prolong the conflict. JOBLESS RATE SPIKES IN EURO BLOC, RETURNING RECESSION: Unemployment reached a new high in October in the European Union, spiking at 11.7 percent in the 17-nation bloc. Data showed 173,000 more people joined the jobless lines in October, over the 18.7 million in the previous month – an increase of 0.1%. The dismal news reflects a return to recession – defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth. “The level of unemployment in Europe remains unacceptably high,” said Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for the European Commission. Almost 19 million people were out of work in countries that use the euro as their primary currency. More than 10% of people living in the Eurozone are currently unemployed. In Spain and Greece, the general unemployment rate tops 25%. But for youth in both countries, the figure is far higher, with levels close to 60%. (Arutz-7) After all of Europe except for Czech betrayed Israel in the UN countdown, by either voting for the Palestinian statehood status or abstaining, this should be no surprise at all. G-d knew what was in the hearts of European political leaders even before their disdain for Israel was manifested. “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.” Gen 12:3

CANADA CALLS BACK DIPLOMATS FOLLOWING UN BID: Canada on Friday ordered back its heads of mission in Israel and Ramallah, as well as its envoys to the UN and Geneva, after the Palestinian Authority’s bid for an upgraded status at the UN was passed with a large majority. "Canada is deeply disappointed but not surprised by the result at the United Nations General Assembly," Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said in a statement. "Our government's position is clear: the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace is through negotiations, not unilateral actions,” he said. "To that end, Canada is bringing its heads of missions in Israel and Ramallah and its permanent representatives to the UN in New York and Geneva back to Ottawa. Canada will now review the full range of its bilateral relationship with the Palestinian Authority," emphasized Baird. On Thursday, Canada joined Israel and the US as one of only nine countries opposing the PA’s bid. The UN General Assembly backed non-member observer status for the PA by an overwhelming vote of 138 against nine, with 41 abstentions. (INN)

MERKEL REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL AFTER UN VOTE: German Chancellor Angela Merkel reassured Israel of her country's support on Saturday, two days after Berlin disappointed the Jewish state by abstaining in a UN vote on the Palestinians' status. Netanyahu's government had hoped Berlin would join the US and a handful of other countries in opposing the resolution. "Germany will always stand on the side of Israel on the issue (of Israeli security)," Merkel said in her weekly podcast, and spoke of Berlin's vocal backing for Israel during its latest clashes with Hamas."Israel has not only the right but the duty to protect its citizens," she added. Merkel did not mention the UN resolution, which upgrades the Palestinians to "non-member state" from entity, a move that gives it access to world bodies including the International Criminal Court. (Yahoo) “Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. No one is concerned for my life.” Ps 142: 4. Pray for Israel’s pain of rejection to be healed by a deeply spiritual revelation of G-d’s mercy, love and grace.

LIES AND MORE LIES: What the Palestinian Authority is doing to pass itself off as a legitimate country in the wake of last week’s UN vote will lead to Europe and the US putting upon the Jewish state near unbearable pressure to divide Jerusalem and to put them into the hands of their Arab enemies have no other aim but to destroy Israel. If one is tempted to think such a thing can’t happen, it already did in the Gaza Strip in 2005. An evacuation process that lasted five days consisted of approximately 8000 Jewish civilians from 21 Israeli communities in the Gaza Strip. This proved to be a false land-for peace-deal with the Palestinians. The Gaza Strip is now a terrorist enclave from which Hamas, over the subsequent years, has launched thousands of projectiles into Israel’s southern communities and only last month reigned down 1,506 rockets in one week’s time upon the Jewish state including in major population areas such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The Palestinians now — with their new UN illegal statehood badge — have their appetites set on displacing hundreds of thousands of Israelis. There is no agenda in the minds of Islamists, Hamas terrorists and the Palestinian Authority for peace with Israel.  It should perhaps be warned once again that it will not go well with the nations and individuals who persist on being a curse and a thorn in the side of G-d’s Beloved, Israel. But the Lord is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.” Joel 3:16
