Israel Update

JERUSALEM-ON-THE-LINE
September 5, 2012

“The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
their feet are caught in the net they have hidden. The Lord is known by his justice;
the wicked are ensnared by the works of their hands.” Ps 9:15-16

OBAMA’S PLATFORM MISSING REFERENCE TO UNITED JERUSALEM: The presidential elections' platform presented to the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina Tuesday was missing a key reference – the United States' commitment to Jerusalem's status as Israel's capital. In 2008, the DNC platform included the following: "All understand that it is unrealistic to expect the outcome of final status negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949. Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."  While addressing the US' obligations to provide defense aid to Israel, as well as its commitment to dealing with the Iranian threat, the platform submitted in 2012 was devoid of this reassurance. Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, slammed Obama over his "shameful refusal" to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and blamed him for once more alienating Washington's key ally in the Middle East. "As president, I will restore our relationship with Israel and stand shoulder to shoulder with our close ally," Romney pledged in a statement. (Ynet)

WALL STREET JOURNAL JUSTIFIES ISRAEL’S MISTRUST OF OBAMA: The Wall Street Journal has penned a scathing editorial against the Obama Administration's handling of the crisis with Iran, saying its attitude is pushing the Jewish state to strike the Islamic Republic on its own. Following Gen. Martin Dempsey's statement that "I don’t want to be complicit" if Israel chooses to attack Iran, the Journal writes acidly: ”We don’t know what exactly Gen. Dempsey thinks American non-complicity might entail in the event of a strike. Should the Administration refuse to resupply Israel with jets and bombs, or condemn an Israeli strike at the UN? The editorial sides with the Jewish state, and says it's no wonder the Israelis are upset at the US Administration. "It’s one thing to hear from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that he wants to wipe you off the map: At least it has the ring of honesty. It’s quite another to hear from President Obama that he has your back, even as his Administration tries to sell to the public a make-believe world in which sanctions against Iran are working and diplomacy hasn’t failed after three and half years. Since coming to office, Obama Administration policy toward Israel has alternated between enmity and incompetence. We don’t know what motivated Dempsey’s outburst, but a President who really had Israel’s back would publicly contradict it." As one an Israeli daily pointed out, Dempsey's statement means the US does not "have Israel's back," contrary to the pledge made by Obama earlier in the year. (Wall Street Journal/INN) “As clouds, and wind, when no rain follows, so is the man that boasts and does not fulfill his promises.” Prov 25:14

PM CONTINUES PUSHING WORLD ON RED LINES FOR IRAN: PM Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday continued his campaign to get the US and the world to lay down a “red line” for Iran. Netanyahu said Iran, which he characterized as a “brutal regime,” was galloping forward with its nuclear program because it did not see a “clear red line from the international community. And it doesn’t see the necessary resolve and determination from the international community.” The greater the resolve, and the clearer the red line, he said, the less would be the chance of conflict because the Iranians would be more likely to back off.  In other words, one government official said, an attack could be averted if plain benchmarks were established, and the Iranians were faced with a clear either/or proposition: Stop uranium enrichment and allow inspection of nuclear sites, or face military action. (J.Post) A cautionary note against building hopes such bench marks might detour Iran from its nuclear goals is that the US has allowed Iran to cross seven previous "red lines" over 18 years with few consequences. How essential it is to pray the “eyes of faith” will be opened in the Jewish state. From government and military officials to the man on the street, may they believe G-d alone is Israel’s hope for deliverance and redemption.

US TO IRAN: STAY CLEAR OF US INTEREST IN GULF AND WE WON’T BACK ISRAEL STRIKE: In a far-reaching press release, which government officials in Washington have subsequently denied, the US reportedly informed Iran, via two European nations, it would not back an Israeli hit against the country's nuclear facilities, as long as Tehran refrains from attacking American interests in the Persian Gulf. Washington was said to have used covert back-channels in Europe to clarify the US does not intend to support Israel in a strike that may spark a regional conflict. In return, Washington expects Iran to steer clear of strategic American assets in the Persian Gulf. (Ynet/NY Times)

ISRAEL INCREASINGLY FEELS IT HAS NO ONE TO RELY ON BUT ITSELF: A senior Israeli official said this week the combination of Iran's progress toward the bomb, the failure of the US to "set red lines" for Iran, and the increasingly critical comments by the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff have left Israel with "a sharpened sense it has no one to rely upon but itself." Gen. Martin Dempsey said last Thursday he did not want "to be complicit" if Israel were to strike at Iran's nuclear facilities. A government official in Jerusalem called Dempsey's comments "strange" and said they characterized the failure of the US to take a determined position against Iran's nuclear drive. "It is strange that next to the oaths and blood libels of Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei and the IAEA report, which states that Iran is speeding up uranium enrichment under its nose - the American chief of staff decides to talk about an Israeli strike rather than giving a determined message to the Iranians," the official said. (Times of Israel) “From the Lord comes deliverance.” Ps 3:8

PERES: ISRAEL HAS HIDDEN CAPABILITIES: Speaking Monday night, President Shimon Peres stated that foes of the Jewish state should not underestimate Israel's capabilities. Peres urged Israel's enemies “to give up the ways of terror and war."  He said the Middle East can be freed of its difficulties in peaceful ways. "We are not threatening anyone, and we are not afraid of the threats against us, whether from near or far. We have known heavy threats and have come out of them on top. I urge our enemies not to make a mistake regarding our capabilities, both open and hidden,” said Peres. (Arutz-7) “I will not trust in my bow, nor will my sword save me. But You have saved us from our adversaries and You have put to shame those who hate us.” Ps 44: 6-7

LIEBERMAN: IRAN NUKE WOULD MEAN COLLAPSE: “If Iran gets nuclear ability it would mean the collapse of every understanding, every agreement on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,” Israel's Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said Tuesday. “The direct result would be a crazed arms race in the entire Middle East.” The international community “must better internalize the implications and the meaning of a nuclear Iran,” he declared. Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia have all expressed interest in nuclear weapons programs. Experts have said officials from all three Sunni Muslim countries want to build nuclear reactors with the aim of developing a full-fledged nuclear program, in order to counterbalance the “Shi'ite bomb” that Iran is developing. MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD OFFICIAL: PEACE WITH ISRAEL BROUGHT CANCER: Ahmad Sabi’, media adviser for the Muslim Brotherhood Freedom and Justice Party in Egypt, recently proclaimed the peace accord between Israel and Egypt has caused Egyptians to suffer from endemic diseases. “I support amending the Camp David agreement, which is a mark of shame upon the Egyptian people. It is an unjust and unfair agreement, which has isolated Egypt from its Arab and Islamic environs, and from the pan-Arab effort to liberate the land of Palestine.”  Sabi' said that in addition, carcinogenic pesticides were imported from the Zionist entity. “Egypt now suffers from endemic diseases, such as various types of cancer, hepatitis, and kidney infections. All these and other diseases are the result of the carcinogenic pesticides, which were brought here along with that agreement.” Sabi’s out-of the-box-reasoning then concludes, "Indeed, this is an unjust agreement, which requires the reexamination of everything to do with Egypt's sovereignty over its land." (INN) Recently elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is heavily backed by the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist organization. Morsi has recently attempted to assure Israel its peace treaty with Egypt is secure. Frequently recorded statements resembling those of Ahmad Sabi’ from Muslim Brotherhood officials, coupled with the organization’s commitment to the destruction of the Jewish state, make Morsi’s words highly suspect.

PAKISTANI MULLAH FRAMED CHRISTIAN GIRL IN BLASPHEMY CASE: Police in Pakistan have arrested an imam on suspicion of deliberately framing a young Pakistani Christian girl, who could face a death sentence for allegedly burning pages of the Koran. Khalid Chishti, was arrested on Saturday after being accused of planting burnt pages of the Koran in a bag the Christian girl, Rimsha Masih, had been carrying.  Masih, aged 13, who has Down’s Syndrome, had been in police custody since being arrested two and a half weeks ago. She could face life in prison or even the death penalty under Pakistan’s strict and highly controversial blasphemy laws. Masih’s lawyers say she is innocent and maintain that not only is she only 13 years old, and should therefore be tried as a juvenile, but that she also has Down's Syndrome and therefore "cannot commit such a crime." Chishti has been outspoken about his disdain for the Christian population and had welcomed the departure of many Christians from the area, following protests by hundreds of Pakistanis who demonstrated outside Masih’s house, demanding that the girl be burnt to death. Tahir Naveed Chaudhry from the All Pakistan Minority Committee said Masih's lawyers had always maintained the evidence was planted. "And now it is proved the whole story was only designed to dislocate the Christian people," he said. "Chishti must be prosecuted under the blasphemy law as it will set a precedent against anyone else who tries to misuse that law," he added. (Arutz-7) Pray for the immediate release of Rimsha Masih who is little more than a child – a child with Down’s Syndrome.  Pray she will be comforted, protected and fully vindicated.  Pray for justice to reign in the case of her cruel persecutor, who has also caused enormous grief to many now displaced Christians.

Blessings from Jerusalem,
